CAST OFF YOUR CARDIES - THE ONLY THING TO BE SEEN IN THIS AUTUMN IS A PONCHO.

IT appears that 18th-century Chileans, 1970s hippies and this year's shelves have something in common and it's nothing as saucy as a burrito. The subject is ponchos, those blankets with a hole in the center and fringe on the edges that have been ridiculed for more than 20 years. Like other staples of the hippie-chick and handcrafted-fashion era, the poncho has been resurrected.
Once again that one-size-fits-all item has style status, having recently being spotted on the likes of Kate Moss and Victoria Beckham.Layering is big for this season, so a poncho is perfect for our erratic Irish weather. When it's scorching one minute and like an October's day the next, the poncho is an essential cover up over a dress or vest and jeans. If you want an authentic vintage piece, trawl through second hand shops for the real deal, but there are some brilliant ponchos on the high street, everything from huge capes to chic capulets.
When it comes to colour, play it safe with versatile shades that work well with your wardrobe. Avoid multi-colours or patterns to refrain from the little old lady look, and pick a length and shape that works. With ponchos set to be big, inject some individuality into the look by accessorising with chunky jewellery or a belt. However, if you are in any doubt about wearing something that is likely to make you look shorter and plumper, leave the ponchos to Clint Eastwood.
